SGA Animation

Since I am beginning production on my senior thesis I am posting my progress and anything to do with my thesis up on this blog.

My film is going to be a music video done in different styles of animation (music done by me).  I want to include a lot of variety and try new things.  The scenes, characters, styles are going to be changing all the time, I don't want my film to be stagnant, I want to put as much into this as I can.  Color, texture, style, sound, music...maybe film? We'll see, it's gonna be exciting!
My main inspirations include the film Mind Game (this has a mixture of styles that I am very interested in doing for my film like film/photo, 2D style, and painted style.  My second main inspiration is Wanwa the Doggy, done by my favorite animation Shinya Ohira.  It's style and movement are so incredible, everything this animator does is mindblowing.

So, my film...

Synopsis -  A girl summons a demon and demands to be given its power.  It denies her demand so she offers it a bit of her blood in sacrifice.  It accepts her blood but instead takes much more from her than she has offered in punishment for her greedy demand.  It grabs her and possesses her by physically entering her being.  Once it is inside of her she must find away to preserve herself and escape the demon world she allowed to be forced inside her being.

I don't want to give away the conclusion...I've got it all planned out, but I want it to be a suprise.  It is basically a fight for her own soul.  To clarify, (which it will be in the actual animation) the demon enters her actual body which leads to the inside of her where she also exists...it is like another world (the world that her soul exists in and the character of her inside is the personification of her soul).  I don't know if I needed to clarify but there it is.

Circus Cat Model

better res video HERE*

This was the project I chose for my final in my Maya class. I decided to model one of my existing characters - The Circus Cat. It was a lot of fun and less daunting that I expected it to be. I enjoyed it a lot.
I also did blend shapes for the facial expressions.
Next I need to paint the UVs, model the eyes, teeth, and tongue, then do a ribbon rig for it.

Character Sheet/Bio and Inspiration

Bea – short for Abby – is a 9-year-old girl with light rosy brown hair in a bun, green eyes, and tan skin from playing outside every day.  Bea is very scrawny, she wears a red and lavender ringer t-shirt with light denim shorts, and red striped tube socks with flip-flops.  She is almost always smiling and positive about everything.  She is always curious; asking questions, and has a very active imagination.  She stands up straight and looks like she is always full of energy and excitement.  She is a student in elementary school and enjoys going to classes and playing at recess.  She is an only child and has a nice home life; she and her parents like to spend time together.  Her favorite things to do are playing outside, recess, finding bugs, daydreaming, and talking to all kinds of people.  She is very open and not afraid to talk to anyone or ask any question, sometimes she may talk too much when she gets excited or meets someone new.
She is not interested in boys; she just wants to make friends with anyone who will be her friend.  Her goal in life is to make friends, she currently only has one.  She sometimes gets frustrated when she realizes that making friends can be hard.  She is always nice and friendly to everyone, she can be affected by other people’s moods, and she is very sympathetic to other people’s feelings.  Bea almost always thinks positively about everything.   Her ambitions don't reach very far into the future, she is only thinking about the present and how much fun she can have playing and being around people.
Bea’s is good at having fun and talking to people, she is also good at helping people out.  However at times, she can be insecure about feeling lonely, she tries really hard to make friends, but sometimes she may be too confident and friendly.
Her only friend is the little boy down the street named Timothy.  He has a red bowl cut, freckles, and is short.  He is 6 years old.  Timothy is always in a bad mood, and he is demanding and bratty.  He lives with his grandmother who cuts his hair and makes him wear a navy blue sailor outfit because it makes him look “so adorable”.  Bea doesn’t mind his attitude; she is always nice and doesn't really realize how negative Timothy can be.
Bea’s parents are very nice as well; they raised her to be kind to everyone and to not take life too seriously.  They rarely punish her because she hardly does anything bad.  Bea is pretty naïve about most things and she is usually in her own world.

Spring Semester Sophomore Animation Final: The Introduction of Milk and Hubert Tittybottom

So, this is my final film of sophomore semester. It took about 6 weeks to animate, I used my animatic story for this.  It was a lot of fun to do, stressful at times, and difficult. However, I am pretty happy with how it all came together.  This is the uncolored version, I am planning on doing a completed color version of this film.  Enjoy!

This is my first attempt at an AE puppet.  It was difficult at first but it became a lot easier to do as i animated.  Once again, this is my awesome character Milk!!

Freeform

Freeform from Lua Pettit on Vimeo.

For this assignment we were allowed to do anything we wanted.  I decided to try doing 2d animation over video.  It was a lot more complicated that I had originally thought, putting the two together.  The end product came out pretty nice, and it was a lot of fun to try out.  I definitely want to do more of this in the future.
